How it differs from preventive maintenance
Preventive maintenance replaces the bearing every 6,000 hours because the manufacturer says so. Predictive maintenance replaces it when vibration shows it is wearing out: not before, wasting useful life, and not after, with the equipment broken.
What it takes, in this order
- A reliable history. Without knowing when each piece of equipment failed and why, there is no pattern to find.
- Something you can measure that is related to the failure.
- A data collection routine, even if it is manual with a handheld device.
- And then sensors and automation.
The usual mistake
Starting with step 4. Buying sensors before you have a history produces a lot of data and no decisions. Predictive maintenance is built on top of preventive maintenance that already works, not instead of it.
