# Service report: what it needs to be useful

Also known as: Job sheet · field service report

A service report is the document that records what the technician did on a job: tasks, time, materials, notes and evidence.

## Three uses that need different things

1. **Proving the work to the customer**: it needs a signature, a date and a description that a non-technical person can understand.
2. **Billing**: it needs hours, materials and travel, accurately.
3. **Feeding the history**: it needs the right asset, the failure mode and notes that help the next person.

A paper report usually covers only the first. The other two are the ones that affect billing and maintenance.

## What makes it useful

The **closing notes**. “Belt showing wear, replace on next visit” is the most valuable line in the whole document: it is the starting point for the next [preventive](https://attendo.me/en/glossary/preventive-maintenance) job.

## The usual mistake

Filling it in from memory at the end of the day. Hours get rounded, materials get forgotten and notes disappear. And every forgotten hour is work that never gets billed.

The PDF with your branding reaches the customer before the technician leaves.

#### Working with subcontractors without losing control of the service

The work you subcontract is still your service in the customer’s eyes. What gets lost is not the work itself. It is knowing whether the job was accepted, when it will happen and what was used. A few simple rules bring that back, without burying anyone in paperwork.
