# Maintenance task list: the backbone of a preventive plan

Also known as: Job plan · PM routine

A maintenance task list is the set of operations carried out on a type of equipment, with their frequency. It is the template that preventive work orders come from.

## What a useful task list includes

- **Specific, checkable operations.** “Check the motor” is not an operation; “check the bearing temperature and record the value” is.
- **Frequency** by calendar, by running hours or by output.
- **Reference values**: what is normal and what is not. Without them, the technician cannot decide.
- **Planned materials**, so the storeroom has them.
- **Estimated time**, so the workload can be planned.

## Where they come from

From the manufacturer’s manual, from the applicable regulations and from **your own breakdown history**, which is often forgotten. If a piece of equipment always fails for the same reason, that belongs in the task list even if the manufacturer does not mention it.

## The usual mistake

Copying the manufacturer’s task list as is and never reviewing it. A living task list is adjusted every year with what has actually happened to your equipment.

## In attendo

The task list is set up as a maintenance plan with its [checklist](https://attendo.me/en/modules/checklists), its reference values and its [planned materials](https://attendo.me/en/modules/purchasing-and-stock). If a reading is out of range, the finding can become planned corrective work.

#### How to build a preventive maintenance plan that actually gets done

The hard part of preventive maintenance is not designing the plan. It is keeping it alive past the first few months. When a plan is abandoned, it is rarely for lack of will. It was usually sized wrong from day one.
