# Asset criticality: how to decide which equipment needs more attention

Also known as: Equipment criticality

Asset criticality is the impact that an asset’s failure has on service, production or safety. It helps you share out a maintenance budget that is always limited.

## How to rate it, simply

Three factors, each scored from 1 to 5 and multiplied:

- **Impact**: what happens if it fails. Does it stop the line? Does it affect safety? Does the customer notice?
- **Frequency**: how often it fails, according to the history.
- **Detectability**: whether you see the failure coming or it strikes without warning.

The result ranks your assets. Those at the top of the list get serious [preventive](https://attendo.me/en/glossary/preventive-maintenance) work; those at the bottom, [corrective](https://attendo.me/en/glossary/corrective-maintenance).

## The usual mistake

Doing the analysis once, saving it in a spreadsheet and never looking at it again. Criticality changes: a redundant machine stops being redundant when its twin breaks down, and a secondary machine becomes critical when what you produce changes.

## In attendo

With [AI-CMMS](https://attendo.me/en/modules/ai-cmms), each corrective job gets a score from 0 to 100 that weighs asset criticality, impact, SLA risk and repeat failures. You set the weights, and a person reviews and decides.

Preventive maintenance is work planned by calendar or by usage to keep failures from happening: routine inspections, lubrication, scheduled replacements and regulatory checks.

Mean time between failures

MTBF (mean time between failures) is the average time a piece of equipment runs properly between one breakdown and the next. It measures reliability.

#### Asset inventory: where to start

Every maintenance project starts with the inventory, and many get stuck there. Not because it is hard, but because it is tedious. And if it is done badly, everything that comes after inherits the problem.
